St.Petersburg Improvisers Orchestra
ARIADNE: sound action for orchestra in 14 spaces
East European Institute of Psychoanalysis
November 3, 2012
Organized by Freud’s Dream Museum

There are some musical pieces, experimenting with space, like Terretektorh by Xenakis, where listeners are situated inside the orchestra. In ARIADNE, only orchestrants has fixed positions, while listeners are moving from space to space, and the character of music transforms depending on the location and speed of movement of the listener.

Musicians were distributed in 14 spaces (the museum premises, corridors, stairs) on two floors of the East European Institute of Psychoanalysis. The total length of «thread» was several hundred meters, and each musician could hear only two or three «neighbors» on both sides of themselves; at each point the sound was different from what was heard in the neighboring areas. «Ariadne» so is a sound labyrinth in which the listener moves, and spatial sound tissue is formed, depending on its location and speed at any given point in time.

Dmitry Bibikov (double bass), Olga Krukovskaya (double bass), Nikolay Rubanov (bass clarinet), Vera Dorn (saxophone), Friedrich Samotny (saxophone), Mikhail Kolovsky (tuba), Konstantin Oganov (trumpet), Valery Dudik (French horn), Nikolay Maevsky (flute), Maxim Pozin (flute), Vladimir Grig (guitar), Denis Sorokin (guitar), Alexander Markvart (guitar), Anna Volkomorova (harp), Vladimir Kitlyar (theremin), Konstantin Gubenko (drums, percussion).
